- Debris management: Known as Foreign Object Debris (FOD), effectively managing, controlling and removing debris from every critical area of an airport is essential to the safe operation of the aircraft there. If done incorrectly, for example while constructing a hangar, FOD will almost certainly lead to damaged aircraft, as it can be easily sucked into engine intakes. FOD management is critical for efficient, safe hangars, especially where aircraft maintenance takes place.
- Electrical planning: Safe, adequate electrical access is essential in a quality aircraft hangar. Outlet banks have to be properly designed and placed so as not to compromise aircraft safety or the safety of personnel in the hangar. This might include outlets connected to rafters or scaffolding, or situated in islands on the floor.
- Floor design: Concrete flooring has to be even, expertly laid and durable. It also has to be able to handle ultra-heavy loads if required, such as large aircraft or stored items and machinery. This means designing for wheel placement, parking loads and entry/exit paths.
- Doors: Hangar doors have to be secure, stable and easily opened when needed, unaffected by weather conditions that can include snow and ice. They cover a huge span, so they need to be wind resistant.
